Lil Spurs Rodeo Series Rules
Age:
Ages 0 -14 years old can compete in the Lil Spurs Rodeo Series. (Can not compete if finished first year of High School Rodeo or freshman year of high school) Age on May 1st of the current year will be the determining age of the member for the entire rodeo season. However, contestants may elect to move up into a higher age group but must do so in all events for the remainder of the year. It is the contestant’s responsibility to sign up in the proper age group.
Entry Fees
Fees for the season will be $2 per event per rodeo. Due dates of the entry fees will be determined and announced every year. All fees go towards the association’s operational costs and yearend-awards. Fees will not be refunded if contestant decides to drop out of association. Fees must be submitted with entry form.
Requirements:
Each member is required to have a Waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian and notarized. The Waiver must be sent with the entry form to the secretary. (If waiver is not sent with the entry form- the contestant will not be entered for the Lil Spurs Series) Members shall conduct himself/herself in a good sportsmanship manner at all times. Mistreatment of rodeo stock or contestant’s horses will result in disqualification from the rodeo.
Entries:
The pre-paid entry system is used to enter the series. This consists of a completed entry form and entry fees being received by the secretary on or before the specified due date. Entries will be accepted five days after the specified due date, with a $15 late fee per contestant.
No entries will be accepted the day of the rodeo!! (Once the entry form and fee is received the contestant will be signed up for all 3 rodeos in the series)
Dress Codes:
Contestant is required to wear Western attire: long sleeved button up shirt, long pants and western boots. Hat is optional. The dress code must be followed when competing in a Lil Spurs event or will be disqualified. Ages 5 and under (not competing inside the arena) can wear closed toe shoes instead of boots and a short sleeve shirt. Long Pants are required.
Point System/ Awards:
This cumulative point system will be the only one used and will be the only means of qualifying for the year end awards. Contestants must participate in at least two rodeos for points to go towards year-end-awards. The maximum number of points earned per event at each rodeo will be 10 points. Points will be given for the top 10 in each event; 10 points for first place 9 points for second place, and so on. In case of a tie, the places involved will be added together and split between the contestants. The top 6 contestants in each event /age group will receive a year-end-award. Year-end-awards will be handed out at the Awards Ceremony at the end of the third rodeo.
All-Around:
Contestants qualifying for all-around points must compete in and earn points in two or more events. One All-Around will be chosen from each age group. Points earned in Rough stock events and Break-away do not count towards All-Around points.
Ground Goat Tail Untie :
The starting line to the stake where the goat is tied will be approximately 15 feet. Time begins when the contestant crosses the designated starting line. The goat will be let go as the contestant crosses the starting line. When the contestant pulls the ribbon off the goat’s tail the judge will drop the flag and time will stop. Adult help (15 seconds)
Ages: 0 -3; 4-5
Goat Tail Untie on Horse:
The contestant races down the arena on horse to the staked goat. Contestant jumps off the horse and pulls the ribbon off the goat’s tail. Time begins when the horse crosses the designated starting line. Time ends when the judge drops the flag. Adult Help (15 seconds)
Ages: Girls/Boys 6-8 :
Stick Horse Barrels:
A cloverleaf barrel pattern will be used. Contestant must ride the stick horse with the stick between their legs, through the complete pattern. The starting line to the first set of barrels will be approximately 15 feet. Time begins when the contestant crosses the designated starting/finish line. Time ends when the contestant completes the barrel pattern and cross the finish line. Penalties: Broken pattern (15 seconds), adult help (15seconds), Stick horse not between legs (10 seconds) barrel knocked over (5 seconds per barrel)
Ages: 0 3
Breakaway Roping:
Time begins when the calf’s nose is past the barrel. A 10 second penalty will be added to the time if the calf is roped before the nose passes the barrel. Two loops will be allowed if two ropes are carried. Second rope must remain tied until used. There will be a 60 second time limit. Time ends when the string breaks from the horn. Rope must pass over the calf’s head.
Ages: Girls/ Boys 11-14
Ground Barrel Crawl:
Contestant will run down to the open barrel with a stick horse between their legs and crawl thru the barrel then race back to finish line. Time begins when the contestant crosses the designated starting line. Time ends when the contestant completes the pattern and crosses the finish line. Penalty: Adult help (15 seconds)
Ages 0-3: 4/5
Flag Race:
The contestant races to the first barrel with flag in hand. The flag must be put in the first bucket on the barrel. The contestant proceeds to the second barrel grabs the flag from the bucket and races home. The pattern is a horseshoe pattern on the outside of the barrels. Any deviation will be a No Time. Contestant must carry the flag in his hand. Carrying of the flag any other place but in his hand carries 5 second penalty. Contestant will be disqualified if: barrel or bucket is tipped over; dropping of the flag; failure to keep the flag in the first bucket; using the flag as a whip; crossing the finish line without the flag from the second bucket; breaking the pattern. Time begins when the horse crosses the designated starting/finish line. Time ends when the horse crosses the finish line. Electric eye will be used.
Ages: Boys 6-8; 9-11; 12- 14
Poles:
Follows NDHSRA Handbook. The judge will flag to start and stop the time for age 9-11; the electric eye will be used for ages 12-14; Ages: Girls 9-11; 12-14;
Barrels:
Follows NDHSRA Handbook; Contestant that is lead or has help will have a 15 second penalty added to their time. The judge will flag to start and stop the time for the ages 4-5 and 6-8. The electric eye will be used for 9 -11 and 12 14 age groups.
Ages: 4-5; Girls 6-8; 9-11; 12-14;
Goat Tying:
Boys must use a piggin string; Girls must use a goat string; Time begins when the horse crosses the designated starting line. Time ends when the goat is tied and the contestant throws hands in the air. The goat will be tied at the stake with a rope at least ten feet in length. The contestant must be mounted on a horse and must ride from the starting line to the goat, dismount from the horse and throw the goat by hand. If the goat is down when contestant reaches it, goat must be stood on 3 feet and goat must be re-thrown and then tie any three feet together with a piggin string/goat string. Goat must remain tied for 6 seconds to receive a time.
Ages: Girls 9-11; 12-14; Boys 9-11; 12-14
Keyhole:
The contestant races down to the keyhole shape made out of flour then turns in either direction inside the keyhole's circle without stepping on or over the flour mark and then races to the finish line. If contestant steps on or over the flour mark it will result in a NO TIME. Time begins when the horse crosses the designated starting/finish line. Time ends when the horse crosses the finish line.
Ages: Girls 6-8; Boys 6-8; 9-11
Steer Stoppin:
The header will start from the left-hand box facing the arena. The Hazer must start from the right hand box. (Hazer optional) Time begins when the steer’s nose is past the barrel. A 10 second penalty will be added to the time if the steer is roped before the nose passes the barrel. Contestant carries only one (1) rope. After catching the steer, contestant should dally to horn. Time will stop when horse, rider, and steer are facing each other, stopped and in a straight line. Broken rope or dropped rope will be considered “No Time’. Legal Catches: Around both horns; half a head; around the neck. Judge will approve the head loops. There will be a 60 second time limit.
Ages: Boys 12-14
Rough Stock:
Rough Stock will be held at the last rodeo. A contestant is required to wear a helmet and a vest to compete. Helmets and vests shall be provided if contestant does not have their own. Contestant will be disqualified if a wrap is used. A 55 lb weight limit is set for the sheep riders. Each contestant is allowed only one adult assistant behind the chutes. Scoring will be 1-25 points for the animal and 1-25 points for the contestant, per judge. Contestants must ride for six seconds to be given a score. No re-rides will be given. No exhibitions. Contestant must compete in at least one other event at two of the rodeos to be eligible for a prize.
Ages 4 -7 Sheep Riding; Ages 8-10 Steer Riding; Ages 11 -14 Steer Riding;
Day sheets will be posted during the rodeo by the secretary’s desk. If there is a concern about a time or points the contestant received that day he/she has 24 hours to bring the concern to a board member. The concern will be directed to a 3 man sub-committee who will handle all time and point concerns. Their decision is final.
